The Transcending Corporate Desperation Workshop:

7 steps to staying positive and productive in the workplace

Corporate desperation is a new phrase for an old corporate-culture phenomenon. Some of the characteristics of a team, department or organization struggling under the weight of corporate desperation are:

Unchallenged worldview - Something is wrong here - pervades mindset of management and front-line employees

Strategic orientation directed toward “fixing” what’s wrong

Abundant amount of time spent putting out fires

Co-workers relate to each other as resources instead of as inherently valuable beings - Little or no authentic appreciation

Customers related to and used as tools for sales/profits

Cynical dismissal or shallow adoption of organizational vision statement

Expectation of worse to come

Overriding individual goal to avoid detection of personal failure

Long hours logged to “prove” commitment and loyalty

Interpersonal conflict usually avoided instead of resolved

Authentic communication of problems put down as exemplifying a bad attitude

“Best” ideas lose out to political considerations - creativity suffers

Undercurrent of fear, anxiety, and stress exponentially heightened during tough economic times as co-workers compete for share of “smaller pie”

People start looking for another job - organization loses best people

Shortsighted strategies considered for immediate sales; long-term interests put in jeopardy

A manager struggling within a culture riddled with many of the above characteristics will ask one obvious question: How can we change this? Transcending Corporate Desperation will show managers how they can combat corporate desperation within themselves and their teams. The 7 steps of the subtitle, 7 steps to staying positive and productive in the workplace, will arm managers with key distinctions, mind-sets, and practices toward redefining who they are at work.

The 7 steps are:

1. Climb out of the melee: Gain the advantage of perspective

2. Be real with people: Practice authentic communication

3. Don the white belt: Adopt the posture of a beginner

4. Be a champion for others: Authentically care for co-workers and customers

5. Get off it: Let go of complaints, regrets, and resentments

6. Be true to yourself: Live by your principles

7. Stand for possibility: Press toward the unpredictable future

Transcending Corporate Desperation will provide all the details the manager needs to become both a shining example for others to true up to and an effective leader who can coach others to follow their lead. Specific suggestions will be provided on implementing the 7 steps into typical management tasks such as performance reviews, staff meetings, departmental and interdepartmental written and voice-mail communications, sales management, and staff motivation.

The workshop runs 9AM-5:30PM. It is a hands-on, interactive, get-work-done experience. Through a mixture of lecturette, exercises, individual and group activities, and one-to-one coaching, participants will uncover and examine how they currently operate in their business climate and then redesign and implement productive and effective ways of being. Transcending Corporate Desperation will provide all of the details the manager needs to become both a shining example for others to true up to and an effective leader who can coach others to follow their lead.
